Turn the breaker off only from a dry panel away from the cooler, keep people clear of the cabinet and its outlet, and leave the power off until the cooler and its circuit have been checked; the collection comes second, and only once the area is safe. ## What it usually means. A wine cooler holds very few parts that should ever run hot. The compressor and its start relay, the condenser fan motor, the control board and its power supply, the driver for the interior light and, on thermoelectric models, the module and its heat sink are the parts that carry current. When the contacts of a relay burn, a fan motor seizes and overheats, a wire chafes against the cabinet frame, or a plug sits loosely in a warm outlet, the smell is often the first sign anyone notices. Undercounter and built-in units live in tight openings with the outlet behind them, so the heat and the smell have nowhere to go except out through the grille. Can I switch it back on? Leave it off. A burned relay or a scorched connector often smells only while current flows, so a quiet cabinet proves nothing, and powering it again can turn a small repair into a larger one. ### Could the smell come from the wine and not the cooler?
