When one stops, the signs depend on which: layered, uneven temperatures when the inside fan fails; a hot compressor, long runs and a slowly warming cabinet when the condenser fan fails; and on a solid-state unit a module that stops cooling almost at once when its heat-sink fan stops. It depends on the model. Some run the inside fan constantly to keep the temperature even; others run it only with the compressor.
