What Sugar Land does

Sugar Land began as a large sugar plantation in the fertile floodplain of the Brazos River, about 19 miles southwest of downtown Houston.

It grew as a company town after the plantations were merged into Imperial Sugar in 1908, and it incorporated as a city in 1959.
