A stainless undercounter wine cooler in a home bar with a shallow puddle of water spreading across the tile floor in front of its closed glass door, unlabeled bottles lying on racks inside and the wall outlet beside it out of reach of the water.

Wine Cooler Leaking Water on the Floor

A wine cooler leaking water leaves a puddle at the toe kick or under the front edge, a wet cabinet floor beneath the lowest rack, or a slow trail along the base of the counter that you only notice when a sock gets wet.

Door closed, prized bottles to a cool dark spot, power off at a dry panel

Water on the floor near an outlet comes before the wine. Keep away from the wet floor near the plug, switch the breaker off only from a dry panel, and leave the power off until the water is gone; then keep the door closed, move the best bottles if the power stays off, and book a visit so the drain and the pan are checked before the next spill.

What it
usually means.

Every compressor wine cooler makes water. The cold plate on the back wall of the cabinet collects moisture from the air each time the door opens, lets it melt off while the compressor rests, and sends it down a small channel and drain hole into a pan near the compressor, where the warmth of the machine dries it away. When the drain hole clogs with sediment, a label that slid off a bottle or a film of mildew, the water backs up, spreads across the cabinet floor and runs out under the door. A cracked pan, a pan knocked out of place in a move, or a cabinet leaning forward instead of slightly back can send the same water onto the floor. On an undercounter unit the outlet usually sits right behind the cabinet, a few inches above that puddle, which is why water on the floor is urgent here even before the wine is at risk.

Inside an open freestanding wine cooler in a US home, the bottom rack pulled out and a technician's gloved hand holding a thin flexible brush at the small drain hole in the rear wall, a few droplets on the cold plate, dark wine bottles on the rack above. The 5 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is the water pooling inside the cabinet under the bottom rack, or only on the floor in front of or behind the unit?

02

Is the outlet the cooler plugs into behind the unit, in the cabinet beside it, or on the wall above the counter?

03

Does the back wall inside carry a coat of ice, and does water run down it when the cooler goes quiet?

04

Was the cooler moved, leveled or pushed back into its opening shortly before the water appeared?

05

Is the water clear, or cloudy and smelling of old wine or mildew?

Check these

Wine cooler leaking water: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Stay clear of the puddle if the outlet or the cord is anywhere near it, and switch the cooler's breaker off only from a dry panel while standing on a dry floor.

02

Once the power is off, keep the door shut and leave a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle rack; a cabinet full of bottles holds its temperature for many hours.

03

If the power has to stay off for more than a day, move the most valuable bottles to the coolest dark place in the house.

Also worth checking

  • When the floor is dry and the power is off, look for standing water under the bottom rack and at the small hole at the foot of the back wall.
  • Tell us where the water collects, whether the back wall is iced, and the model number from the label inside the cabinet.

5 things wine cooler leaking water on the floor turns out to be, from cabinet leaning toward the door to sweating tubing behind a built-in column.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Cabinet leaning toward the door

If the cabinet tips forward, melt water runs toward the door instead of the channel at the back. Turning the front leveling legs up a little often ends the drip.

  2. 02 low

Drain hole under the cold plate clogged

The small opening at the foot of the back wall is the only way out for the melt. Once sediment or a scrap of label plugs it, water gathers on the cabinet floor and spills past the gasket.

  3. 03 low

Melt pan cracked or knocked out of place

The pan sits low behind the grille or at the back beside the compressor. A crack, or a pan that slipped during a move, lets every melt drip straight onto the floor.

  4. 04 low to moderate

Heavy ice on the back wall melting at once

When a leaking seal lets humid air in, the back wall ices over and later sheds more water in one go than the drain can take.

  5. 05 low to moderate

Sweating tubing behind a built-in column

On a full-height built-in unit, a length of cold tubing that has lost its insulation sweats in a humid kitchen and drips behind the cabinet, so the puddle appears at the side of the opening.

Questions about
wine cooler leaking water on the floor.

Where does the water in a wine cooler normally go?
Down the back wall into a channel, through a small drain hole and into a pan beside the compressor, where it evaporates. You should never see it; a puddle means that path is blocked, cracked or tilted the wrong way.
Can I clear the drain hole myself?
On many models a pipe cleaner or a little warm water poured into the channel frees it, once the power is off and the floor is dry. If the water returns within a week, the pan, the slope or an iced back wall is the real cause.
Is standing water inside the cabinet bad for the bottles?
It raises the humidity past what corks need, invites mildew on labels and can soak the lowest wooden rack. Wipe it out, let the cabinet dry, and have the drain looked at before the labels start to spot.
Why does the leak show up only every few hours?
Most compressor wine coolers melt the frost on the back wall during each rest. If the drain is slow, water gathers during that melt and spills over, then stops until the next rest.
