What DUMBO does

Developer David Walentas and his firm Two Trees Management bought many of its buildings in the late 20th century and remade the area as an upscale place to live and work.

Many of its former industrial buildings have been converted into spacious luxury residential lofts.

Dumbo began as a ferry landing on the East River and is still marked by Belgian block streets and 19th- and early 20th-century warehouses.

A tower's generator keeps the elevators and pumps running but rarely the apartments, so a wine cooler on a high floor warms with the unit in an outage, and the best plan is to keep its door shut and let the insulation hold the bottles steady as long as it can.
