What Aventura does
to a wine cooler.

Known at first as Turnberry, Aventura got its name from a remark by the developers of its first condominiums, and it incorporated as a city in 1995.

Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 blew out high-rise windows across Aventura and knocked out its electricity.

A typical Aventura summer day does not drop below 75°F.

The 1990s brought about 22 percent of Aventura's present housing.

Tower living

Floor-to-ceiling glass in a tower lets afternoon sun reach a wine cooler set near the window, and the heat and light falling on its glass door keep the compressor running and age the wine faster, so moving it a few feet is sometimes the whole fix.

Seasonal houses

Opening the house for the season, a caretaker may find the wine cooler running but damp inside, with water under the bottom rack and a musty smell, from a door that never fully closed, and the repair begins with the hinge and the gasket.

On the water

Along salt water the air eats at a wine cooler's condenser, hinge pins and rack slides, above all on a bar near an open slider or a lanai, and a slow loss of cooling there is checked for corroded tubing and a pitted coil.
