Troubleshooting

Find the wine cooler model plate on any make or style

The wine cooler model number is printed on a small plate or sticker, usually inside the cabinet. U-Line puts it on the upper right or back wall, Marvel on the left side near the top, and Sub-Zero on a side wall, the ceiling, the underside of the control or a divider, depending on the series. Copy it exactly, suffix included, together with the serial.

At a
glance.

The plate that carries the wine cooler model number is small, silver or white, and nearly always inside the cabinet, yet each maker picks a different wall, ceiling or divider for it. A flashlight and a minute of looking usually find it without moving a single bottle.

Why the plate matters before anything is ordered

Wine coolers from one maker can look identical across several years while their fans, controls, sensors and gaskets change underneath. The model number says which design it is, the serial number identifies the individual unit, and makers ask for both whenever service is requested. Without them, a first visit can end with a diagnosis and a second trip for the part.

The plate also unlocks the right manual, which explains the display, the modes and the normal sounds of that exact cabinet, and it is what a recall notice is checked against. CPSC publishes recalls with the affected products described, so a quick search before a repair costs nothing.

  • Ordering a door gasket, a rack or a hinge that fits the first time.
  • Downloading the owner's guide and the installation guide for that model.
  • Searching the recall list before paying for a repair.
  • Booking a visit with the likely parts identified in advance.

Where the plate sits, maker by maker

Makers publish the location, and the cross-brand pattern is simple: inside, high up, on a surface you can see with the door open. The details below come from each maker's own documents.

U-Line and Marvel

U-Line's dual-zone Wine Captain guide puts the model and serial plate on the upper right or the back wall of the interior. Marvel's owner's guide for its undercounter wine models places the serial plate inside the cabinet on the left side, near the top. On a full cabinet, shine the light into the gap between the top rack and the ceiling rather than pulling racks out.

Sub-Zero wine storage

Sub-Zero lists three places, by series. Designer wine storage carries the tag on the handle-side wall directly below the control panel. UW-24, BW-30 and 400 Series units may carry it on the ceiling inside or on the underside of the control panel. The 315W has it on the compartment divider, directly behind the kickplate.

Other makes

Most other built-in wine coolers follow the same habit, with a sticker on an upper side wall or the ceiling. Freestanding and thermoelectric units vary more, so search the inside walls first and then the back panel, where some compact models carry the sticker close to the cord.

Where to look first on each style of cabinet

The shape of the cabinet narrows the search before the brand does. On an undercounter unit, kneel so your eyes are level with the top rack and light the ceiling and the two upper side walls; the plate is rarely lower than the first rack. On a full-height column, open the door wide and check the wall on the handle side near the control, then the ceiling, which may need a step stool.

A dual-zone cabinet adds the divider between its zones, which is worth checking from above and below. A small freestanding unit, compressor or thermoelectric, is the one style where the back panel is a real possibility; tilt it only after the bottles are out, and only enough to read the sticker, since the cord and the ventilation fins sit right there.

Reading the plate once you find it

Plates carry several strings of letters and numbers. The one after Model, Mod or M/N is what matters for parts and manuals; the one after Serial, Ser or S/N identifies your unit. The electrical and refrigerant lines can be ignored when looking up a manual, though the technician will want them.

Copy the model exactly, including dashes, suffixes and zeros. U-Line's dual-zone guide covers models that differ only in their last characters, such as U-2275ZWCOL-00 and U-2275ZWCOL-60. Swapping a letter O for a zero, or dropping the suffix, is a common reason a parts search comes back empty.

  • Model: the string after Model, Mod or M/N.
  • Serial: the string after Serial, Ser or S/N.
  • Photograph the plate straight on with the flash off, so the characters do not glare.

When the plate is worn, hidden or gone

Stickers on an inside liner sometimes curl in the cool, damp air of a wine cabinet, and a panel-ready unit may hide its plate behind a rack that does not slide out. Check the paperwork first: U-Line's guide asks owners to record the model and serial inside its front cover, and the warranty registration card carries them too. The receipt, the installer's invoice or the carton label stored in the basement can hold them as well.

Do not remove the grille, the rear panel or the whole cabinet from its opening to hunt for a plate. If nothing turns up, a technician can usually identify the cabinet from its control, its racks and its machine compartment during the visit.

Step
by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

Open and light

Open the door and shine a flashlight across the upper side walls, the ceiling and the back wall.

02

Check the control area

Look at the underside of the control panel and the wall just below it, where several makers place the tag.

03

Check dividers and the back

On dual-zone units look at the divider between zones; on small freestanding units check the back panel.

04

Record it

Photograph the plate and copy the model and serial exactly, suffix included.

Questions
owners ask.

Is the model number the one shown on the display?
No. A number on the display is a temperature or a code. The model number is printed on the plate or sticker, usually on an inside wall or the ceiling of the cabinet.
My panel-ready unit has a wood front. Where is the plate?
Still inside. A panel-ready unit carries its plate on an interior wall or ceiling, the same as the stainless version; the custom panel only dresses the outside of the door.
Do I need the serial number as well?
Yes, when booking or ordering parts. U-Line, for example, asks for both the model and the serial when owners contact it, because parts can change within a single model.
The plate is unreadable. Can the paperwork stand in for it?
Often. The purchase receipt, the installer's invoice or a copy written into the manual usually has the model, and the technician can confirm the rest on site.
