GE Profile wine coolers,
specifically.

GE Profile's current wine cooler is the 44-bottle PWS06D, a 24-inch dual-zone unit with a cooler upper zone for whites and a warmer lower zone for reds. It can be built in or left freestanding, and older GE Profile single-zone wine chillers are still in many homes.

The GE Profile lineup

What is particular
to GE Profile.

We work on the GE Profile PWS06D dual-zone wine chiller and older single-zone GE Profile wine chillers with RED WINE, WHITE WINE and CUSTOM TEMP pads. The owner's manual number on the label decides which set of controls applies.

Zones with fixed jobs

The upper zone runs from 43 to 55°F and the lower from 55 to 62°F, with 45°F and 55°F recommended. A lower zone that will not go below 55°F is working as designed, not failing.

It defrosts on its own

The PWS06D defrosts automatically, and the compressor pauses for about 30 minutes while it does. Water can collect in the drain pan above the compressor after defrost, which we check before chasing a leak.

Leveled to close itself

GE sets the chiller with a slight backward tilt so the door swings shut, and it wants the door to stand a little proud of the cabinets. A unit pushed too deep or leveled flat often ends up with door-alarm complaints.

Older chillers act differently

Earlier single-zone GE Profile wine chillers keep humidity up on purpose, so some frost inside is normal, and after a power cut their controls return to the RED WINE setting. They also have a key lock above the door.

Parts

Drawers, gaskets, leveling legs and the control are ordered by model and serial from the label inside the cabinet. Older single-zone chillers can have long waits for control parts.

Repair or replace

A PWS06D with a door, drawer or control problem is usually worth fixing. On an older single-zone chiller with a failed sealed system, replacement is often the better call.

Questions about
GE Profile wine coolers.

Why won't the lower zone of my GE Profile wine cooler go below 55°F?
The lower zone is built for reds and its range starts at 55°F. For colder storage use the upper zone, which goes down to 43°F.
Why did my GE Profile wine cooler stop running for half an hour?
It was probably defrosting. GE says the compressor does not run for about 30 minutes during the defrost cycle.
Why is there frost inside my older GE Profile wine chiller?
The older single-zone chillers hold humidity high to protect corks, and GE notes frost can form as a result. Heavy buildup still needs removing, and a sudden change is worth a visit.
Can a GE Profile wine cooler go in a cabinet run?
Yes. It can be built into a 24-inch opening or stand alone, and GE wants the door to stand slightly out from the cabinet faces.
