Vinotemp wine coolers,
specifically.

Vinotemp sells one of the widest wine cooler catalogs on the US market, from compact single-zone units to panel-ready undercounter models and large dual-zone cabinets. Its owner's manuals are written series by series, so a Private Reserve, a Connoisseur, a Butler and an older VT-DS model can each show a different code for the same kind of trouble.

The Vinotemp lineup

What is particular
to Vinotemp.

We service Vinotemp's panel-ready Private Reserve undercounter units in 15, 18 and 24-inch widths, the Connoisseur and Butler dual-zone coolers, and freestanding compressor cabinets. Which manual and which code list apply is settled by the model number printed inside the cabinet.

Each series has its own codes

Older VT-DS built-in models show HI and LO, Private Reserve units use E1, E2 and E7, and Connoisseur and Butler dual-zone models show EL or EH. The label inside the door, not the display, is where our diagnosis starts.

Built in or standing alone

Many Vinotemp compressor models can stand freestanding or be recessed into cabinetry, breathing through a front vent that must stay open. Some Private Reserve units are even rated for outdoor use, as long as the air around them stays between 44°F and 90°F.

Compressor and thermoelectric units

Vinotemp's warranty terms cover thermoelectric wine coolers as well as compressor models, and the two cool in different ways. A thermoelectric unit depends on its cooling module and fans, a compressor unit on a sealed system, so knowing which one you own changes what gets tested first.

A brief HI can be normal

Vinotemp's own manual says HI may show after a big load of bottles or when the door was not shut tightly, and should clear about 5 minutes after the door closes. A HI that stays or keeps returning is when the door seal, the airflow and the sensor get checked.

Parts

Controls, sensors and fans differ from one Vinotemp series to the next, so they are matched to the model and serial number. Parts for older or discontinued models are usually ordered once the first visit has confirmed the cause.

Repair or replace

A compressor unit with a failed sensor, door switch or fan is usually worth repairing. A small thermoelectric unit with a failed cooling module is a closer call, and on an older model we lay out both options before any work starts.

Questions about
Vinotemp wine coolers.

Why does my Vinotemp show HI right after I restock it?
A large load of room-temperature bottles, or a door that did not close tightly, can lift the cabinet air past 73°F, and the older built-in models then show HI. Close the door firmly and give it a few minutes. If HI stays for hours or the buzzer starts, book a visit.
What do E1, E2 and E7 mean on a Vinotemp Private Reserve?
E1 and E2 report a failed air temperature sensor, and E7 a failed door switch. None of them clears with a setting change, so write down the code and book a visit.
Can a Vinotemp wine cooler go outdoors?
Some Private Reserve models are rated for outdoor use, but only where the air stays between 44°F and 90°F. Other series are for indoor use only, so check the manual for your model before moving it outside.
My Vinotemp has frost on the back wall. What should I do?
Vinotemp puts it down to too much humidity or a very low setting, and tells owners to unplug the unit and let the ice melt. If frost comes back soon after, the door seal or the defrost side needs a look.
